Gleanings from the Garden of God’s Word

in Gardening, Parenting on 10/07/12

Weeds & the Benefits of Team Efforts

Our kids had planted seeds a few months ago in their own gardens and because we have not been as diligent as we needed to be the weeds have overgrown and many, not all, but many of their seeds didn’t come up.  The weeds choked out the fruit we were so hoping for when we sowed the seed.  What a good lesson to learn.  Hard, but good right!  🙂

Many a year have I tended the garden and done most of the hard work myself, with a few children really helping, but this year, they each got their own.  For the purpose of teaching them how to garden and the reality of the work that needs to go into a garden.  As we each attempted to weed… everyone agreed it was much more productive and easier to work together as a team, rather than separately. In last years garden we had much more fruit and the garden was so pretty, plus it was WAY less work, working together!

Our human nature desires and craves independance and ownership but honestly… doing it on your own is so much harder. Working as a team is much more productive, fruitful, and it is more fun as well as you learn more about one another; talking as you work in close proximity.

Likewise we need each other to help live righteous lives.

When their is sin in our lives we need our brothers and sisters in Christ to walk along side us, point out the sin (when we can’t recognize it), or walk with us through dealing with our sin, mourn and grieve with us over our sin and help us to live in victory over our sin. When we live like this we can celebrate those victories together and praise Him for the unity He can only bring.  We need the body of Christ to work together as a team, to weed together, so that God’s garden produces more fruit and has a larger harvest.  It is when we ignore the “weeds” or “sin” in our lives and don’t pick them out that we no longer look like what “God’s garden” should look like (fruitful, bountiful).

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.” Colossians 1:9-12, NIV

God Bless,
